Reviewed 15 October 2026. YMS and India YPS do not let you include family members as dependants on the application. A partner needs a separate qualifying route. Child-related eligibility restrictions must also be checked; simply leaving a child behind does not necessarily remove them.
A shared move can still have two separate immigration plans. One person may qualify for YMS while the other is outside the age band, has a different nationality or needs a ballot. Start with independent route checks and only then build a shared arrival calendar. A relationship does not automatically allow one partner to use the other’s permission.
Give each person a complete route row
Record nationality, age, previous participation, child-related circumstances, current status and the intended route for each adult. Do not stop after the first person appears eligible. If one needs a ballot, the shared calendar depends on selection and later approval, not merely a preferred departure month. Keep each person’s fees, funds and permission dates separate before calculating household costs.
Compare alternatives without inventing a fallback
Ancestry, HPI, Student, Skilled Worker or a family/dependant route may be relevant only if their own requirements are met. A grandparent connection needs the Ancestry evidence; a degree alone does not guarantee HPI; a relationship alone does not guarantee a family visa. Use a comparison canvas with confirmed gates and unresolved questions.
If the couple intends to live apart temporarily, include the real cost and practical effect in the plan. Do not use visitor permission as an assumed long-term residence or work solution. Check the activities and duration permitted by the actual route. If the facts are complex, take advice with both people’s timelines visible rather than asking a single isolated question about one passport.
Build a shared plan that can change
Create shared milestones only after the independent dependencies are understood. Record housing commitments, travel flexibility, separate work rights and the possibility of different expiry dates. A later route change for one person may not automatically change the other’s permission. Keep each status record and application task visible. The goal is an informed household decision, not a checker that declares the couple “ready” because one person passes.
| Household issue | Person A | Person B |
|---|---|---|
| Entry route | Independently verified | Independently verified |
| Ballot / application | Own selection and decision | Own selection and decision |
| Funds and fees | Own requirements and costs | Own requirements and costs |
| Work conditions | Actual permission | Actual permission |
| Expiry / later plan | Individual calendar | Individual calendar |
Agree the household fallback before paying for commitments
Discuss what happens if one person is selected, approved or ready earlier than the other. Record separate-arrival, delayed-move and no-move options alongside the costs. A shared plan can be emotionally important without being a shared immigration permission. Making the alternatives explicit helps the couple avoid a last-minute assumption that a visitor stay or an unverified route will fill the gap.
Keep a per-person evidence and expiry sheet even after both people arrive. Nationality, extension eligibility and later-route opportunities can differ. One partner may qualify for a third year while the other does not, or one may obtain a sponsored role with dependant rules that need separate assessment. Do not carry a conclusion from one person’s case into the other’s file without checking it.
For the shared budget, separate individual government charges and evidence requirements from joint living costs. Write who pays each commitment and whether it is refundable. Keep identity, financial and family records private rather than placing everything in a broadly shared folder. Where children, prior participation or current status creates a material question, seek specific advice using both people’s timelines. The aim is a workable household decision with honest dependencies, not a website score that treats one eligible partner as proof that the couple can move.
Set a joint review date after either person receives a decision or a material route fact changes. Update shared commitments from the actual outcome while preserving each individual’s remaining requirements and permission dates.
A practical example
An Australian applicant qualifies for YMS while the partner has a different nationality and no confirmed route. The couple does not book a joint permanent move based on the first result. They compare the partner’s genuine options, record the unresolved gates and keep housing commitments flexible. The shared plan follows two lawful routes rather than treating the relationship as dependant permission.
Put the plan into practice
Use the accompanying resource to turn the explanation into a file you can actually review. Work through these actions in order; where a point is uncertain, record the uncertainty rather than changing the facts to fit a preferred answer.
- Complete a full independent route check for each person.
- Identify ballot, qualification or sponsorship dependencies separately.
- Compare alternatives only against their actual requirements.
- Build a shared budget and calendar that preserves each person’s permission dates and lawful fallback.
Questions to resolve before you act
Does each person have their own route? Have child-related restrictions been answered honestly? Is a visitor stay being mistaken for residence? Are later changes assumed to cover both people automatically?
