Reviewed 15 October 2026. Hong Kong SAR passport holders and Taiwan applicants need Youth Mobility ballot selection. All 2026 YMS ballots are closed as of this review; the official page says 2027 details will be published there. India uses a different ballot.

A ballot is not one universal process. The relevant YMS mechanism, nationality and instructions need to match. Old templates may show a past email window, while India-related search results can describe a different entry form. Your preparation should preserve the exact official instructions for the announced window and leave unannounced future dates blank.

Confirm the passport category

For Hong Kong, the official YMS guidance specifically refers to SAR passports. Certain British nationality statuses have different treatment on the eligibility page. Record the exact status rather than using “Hong Kong resident” as a visa category. Taiwan applicants should likewise use the relevant official eligibility and ballot instructions. If multiple passports or statuses are involved, check the actual route rather than switching labels casually.

Read the current instructions before drafting

The official guidance describes an email ballot mechanism and required identifying information for the announced window. Do not send an entry using last year’s dates or assume an early email will reserve a place. The 2026 windows have closed. Once a future window is announced, copy the opening/closing time and timezone into your planner directly from the official page.

Entry is free, and duplicate attempts are not counted. Keep your own copy and confirmation, and monitor the email address you control. Do not give a third party access to your mailbox or pay for a claimed guaranteed selection. A service offering clerical help cannot change a random selection mechanism.

Selection starts an application task

A successful ballot email is an invitation to apply, not permission to travel. The current guidance gives 90 days to submit the visa application, pay and complete biometric steps. Read the actual invitation carefully and map all required evidence. The general YMS funds and other conditions still apply. A full visa application can be refused even after selection if the substantive requirements are not met.

Question Correct check Avoid
Which mechanism? YMS Hong KongSAR/Taiwan official page Using India YPS instructions
When? Actual future announced dates/timezone Recycling 2026 dates
What evidence? YMS requirements and invitation Assuming selection is approval
What next? Application and identity deadlines Booking travel on ballot email

Preserve the current instructions as a dated reference

When a future ballot is officially announced, save the current instruction page privately with a date and record the relevant timezone. Read the required format from that announcement rather than reusing a template unchecked. The mechanics are part of the task: a message sent outside the window or missing required information cannot be made timely by a later explanation that you intended to enter.

Keep the entry email or confirmation under your control and record how you will monitor results. Use secure account practices and do not give a purported agent email passwords or verification codes. If you seek clerical assistance, distinguish that help from any claim of improved selection odds. Free entry and random selection should be described clearly; a premium paid to someone else does not become an official government charge.

If selected, start a separate application tracker. Copy the actual deadline and instructions, then assign funds, documents, payment and identity tasks. A saved ballot entry proves neither the required savings history nor the later visa decision. Keep travel commitments conditional on the actual permission. If not selected, record that outcome accurately and recheck future eligibility before another announced ballot; do not describe it as an immigration refusal or promise that a later selection is inevitable.

Keep failed delivery messages or other relevant entry correspondence if something goes wrong, but do not assume they establish a valid entry. Follow the official instructions for the actual window. A publisher or intermediary cannot accept a late ballot entry on the government’s behalf or reserve a place after the window closes.

A practical example

A Taiwan applicant finds a saved entry template from the previous year. The planner records “closed” and leaves the next window blank. Before any future entry, the applicant will refresh the required format and timing from GOV.UK. The preparation now focuses on identity and funds, without sending an out-of-window email or paying someone to “hold” a place.

Put the plan into practice

Use the accompanying resource to turn the explanation into a file you can actually review. Work through these actions in order; where a point is uncertain, record the uncertainty rather than changing the facts to fit a preferred answer.

  1. Record the exact nationality/passport category and confirm ballot need.
  2. Check the official current status before using any saved template.
  3. When dates are announced, record timezone and required format from that announcement.
  4. After selection, map the actual application, payment and identity deadlines.

Questions to resolve before you act

Are the instructions for your route and passport? Is the entry window actually open? Are you confusing a ballot invitation with a visa decision? Can you control and monitor the email receiving official messages?

Open the YMS Ballot Instruction and Deadline Sheet. Use it to record your own dates and evidence before spending money or submitting an application.
