Reviewed 15 October 2026. The general YMS file includes identity and funds evidence, with TB screening where required and certified translations for non-English/Welsh documents. Some nationalities need additional official documents. Use the checklist for your exact category, not another applicant’s experience.

A short visa checklist can still have long dependencies. A criminal-record certificate may need ordering, a bank may need time to issue evidence, or an appointment may be in another location. Start by marking which tasks apply to your nationality and residence history. Then schedule them in an order that keeps time-sensitive documents suitable for the actual application.

Separate general and country-specific evidence

The official documents page identifies extra records for Andorra, Iceland, San Marino and Uruguay, and ballot confirmation for Hong Kong/Taiwan. Read the current wording and issue-date requirements for your category. A friend from another nationality may not have needed the same document. India YPS has a separate degree and police dossier and should not be reduced to this general checklist.

Sequence the evidence windows

Passport details should match the other evidence. Check the actual validity and identity requirements before starting a form, especially if renewal or a name change is planned. Keep a clear record of old and new document details if the process requires them. Do not create a mismatch by switching passports halfway through without checking the application instructions.

Map the funds history and any TB appointment separately. The TB test depends on the official residence criteria and, where required, an approved clinic. A clinic certificate or country-specific document may become too old if you order it long before a future application. The planner should show “request later” where appropriate rather than treating early ordering as universally better.

Prepare the identity and upload stage

The application service explains how to prove identity and provide documents, including whether an appointment is needed. Follow those instructions instead of an old video’s screens. Keep scans complete and readable, with originals and translations paired. Preserve the submitted form, evidence and confirmations in a private archive. If a document cannot be issued, investigate the official position before assuming a personal explanation alone will replace it.

Task Relevant check Timing issue
Identity Exact passport and names Renewal or name change
Funds 28-day history and recency Balance dip / delayed application
Country document Nationality-specific requirement Issue-age limit
TB if required Residence criteria / approved clinic Appointment and validity
Translation / identity step Current service instructions Complete evidence before deadline

Use received-and-reviewed as the completion test

Every evidence task should have an issuer, expected lead time and review step. “Police document requested” and “police document received and checked” are different states. The same applies to bank statements, translations and clinic evidence. Once issued, check names, dates, completeness and the particular official requirement before marking the task finished.

For identity appointments, rely on the actual service instructions after beginning the correct application. A video from another year, country or route may show a different provider or sequence. Keep the booking confirmation, required originals and upload tasks in one checklist. If an appointment is moved, reassess the consequences for evidence age, invitation deadlines and intended travel instead of changing only the diary entry.

Keep the final archive distinct from drafts and requests. It should contain the form actually submitted, the unchanged evidence uploaded and the relevant confirmations. Do not retain only screenshots of successful uploads while discarding the source files. If further information is requested, a clear archive helps establish what was already sent. This is a practical quality-control habit, not an invitation to submit extra sensitive documents indiscriminately; include what is relevant under the actual instructions.

If two tasks conflict, resolve the dependency explicitly. A passport renewal may affect an appointment, and a delayed record may affect evidence recency. Write which task must finish first and who will confirm the next step. Do not book incompatible dates merely to make the calendar appear complete or rely on a draft application as proof that all later deadlines are protected.

A practical example

An Icelandic applicant sees a general post saying only passport and bank statement are needed. The official country-specific section identifies the criminal-certificate task. The applicant records its issue-date requirement and schedules the request around the actual application plan, while funds evidence is prepared to a different calendar.

Put the plan into practice

Use the accompanying resource to turn the explanation into a file you can actually review. Work through these actions in order; where a point is uncertain, record the uncertainty rather than changing the facts to fit a preferred answer.

  1. Select the exact nationality category and list additional documents from the official page.
  2. Record passport and name consistency tasks before booking services.
  3. Map funds, TB and country-document timing against the actual application date.
  4. Follow the live identity/upload instructions and save a final private archive.

Questions to resolve before you act

Does a country-specific requirement apply? Are all pages readable and translated where needed? Will issue dates remain suitable? Does an appointment or renewal change the intended sequence?

Open the Nationality-Specific Document and Appointment Tracker. Use it to record your own dates and evidence before spending money or submitting an application.
