Reviewed 15 October 2026. Only eligible Australian, Canadian and New Zealand nationals can currently extend YMS for one year. The applicant must be in the UK with valid YMS permission, and the extension can be used once. South Korea’s 18–35 age band does not itself provide this extension.
The third-year rule is often confused with the expanded age bands. Keep them as separate checks. Nationality, current permission, location and timing all matter. If the extension is available, build its evidence and cost tasks into the permission calendar. If it is not, plan a separate lawful next step instead of waiting for an extension the route does not offer you.
Confirm the specific extension category
Read the extension page rather than relying on a general summary saying “YMS is two years” or “YMS is three years”. The original grant is normally two years, and this specific group can apply for an additional year. It is not automatic and should not be represented to an employer as granted before the application outcome. Keep the actual original expiry visible.
Plan the timing and cost
The official guidance says to apply no more than 28 days before current permission expires. Check the live instructions and your actual dates rather than using an anniversary from memory. The extended permission runs from the day after the original permission ends. Do not allow the original permission to expire while assuming a reminder or employer discussion counts as an application.
Current charges are£340 application fee and£776 IHS for the one-year extension. Rates can change, so record the date checked and refresh before payment. Include any required identity/document steps and preserve confirmations. A future extension budget is not the same as a current grant of permission.
Use the extra year deliberately
An additional year can support work, study or other permitted plans, but it does not remove the route’s conditions or guarantee a later switch. If the long-term goal is sponsored work, use a separate employer/role assessment and plan early. If leaving at the end, budget for that outcome too. A credible career plan includes a lawful departure scenario instead of treating an unconfirmed future visa as inevitable.
| Check | Current position | Planning task |
|---|---|---|
| Nationality | Australia / Canada / New Zealand only | Verify exact category |
| Current status | Valid YMS and in the UK | Record actual expiry |
| Timing | No more than 28 days before expiry | Check live application instructions |
| Cost | £340+£776 currently | Refresh before payment |
| Next step | Extension once, separate later route | Keep alternative plan |
Keep extension readiness and career ambition distinct
Create one checklist for the extension application and another for what you want to do during the extra year. The first concerns the actual nationality, valid permission, location, timing and required steps. The second concerns work, study or other permitted plans. A strong career goal does not replace a missing extension condition, and a possible extension does not mean the additional permission has already been granted.
Give the application task a clear owner and completion test. Record when the correct application is submitted and preserve its confirmations; do not mark it complete when a fee estimate is saved or a draft is opened. Recheck the live instructions at the time because the current guide is a dated reference. If travel is planned around an in-country application, inspect the relevant official rules and advice before committing.
Use the extra-year budget with a second outcome. If a later sponsored route is your goal, record genuine employer and role milestones while preserving a lawful departure plan. Do not let an additional year become a reason to defer every later-route question until the new final month. A useful extension planner makes time visible and keeps uncertainties named, including what will happen if the future job, sponsor or alternative permission does not become available.
Keep a dated copy of the extension guidance used for planning, then refresh it when applying. A calendar reminder is a prompt to review the actual instructions, not evidence that an application has been submitted.
A practical example
A South Korean holder hears that YMS now lasts three years because the upper application age is 35. The official extension page shows that the third year is limited to the three named nationalities. The holder changes the plan early enough to investigate another route or departure, rather than discovering the distinction in the final month.
Put the plan into practice
Use the accompanying resource to turn the explanation into a file you can actually review. Work through these actions in order; where a point is uncertain, record the uncertainty rather than changing the facts to fit a preferred answer.
- Confirm whether the named extension category covers your nationality.
- Record actual original permission expiry and the official application window.
- Budget the current fee/IHS and identity/document tasks.
- Plan the extra year or an alternative route using actual conditions, not an assumed grant.
Questions to resolve before you act
Are you eligible for the third year or only the wider age band? Have you used the extension before? Are you in the required location with valid permission? What is the plan if a separate later route is unavailable?
Open the YMS Third-Year Extension Readiness Planner. Use it to record your own dates and evidence before spending money or submitting an application.
